Divi vs Extra

Question

Divi vs Extra: Your thoughts?

I’m looking to create a food blog from scratch that will feature photos, recipes, stories, and downloadable information products. I have a lifetime membership to Elegant Themes and am accustomed to using Divi WordPress Theme for my development, but am now just learning about the Extra WordPress Theme, which appears to be designed more specifically for the needs of bloggers rather than website developers.

Divi vs Extra

Does anyone have any insight they can share about which platform I should use to get up and running quickly with features that will be customizable and scalable down the road? Is the answer to use the Extra Theme + the Divi Plug-in? Something else entirely?

Much thanks in advance for any light you can shed in my direction.

  1. Trouble with Extra is that it is lacking a certain amount of LOVE from Elegant Themes and is missing a number of features which are in DIVI. I wish they would just combine the two since the Blog module in Divi is all but useless since you can’t even limit the length of the excerpt amongst other things.
There is also an issue in Extra that the stylesheet uses 1024 breakpoint for desktop whereas the page builder uses 980 so you have to edit the styles.css file but it is only in 2 place but you have to remember to do this every time you update the theme.

  2. Extra has the Divi Builder build in just like Divi. It just lays out things a little bit differently and has some features like the category builder. You should just try it out to see if it is the right theme for your but from what you write, it sounds like it could be the better choice for you.

  3. I’ve used EXTRA Theme more than I have DIVI professionally. For a blog, it really can’t be beat. The ability to easily display tons of stories without reproduction is nice. The only thing that DIVI beats EXTRA at is plugins. Things like DIVI 100 Article Cards plugin doesn’t work with EXTRA, there aren’t a bazillion child themes available like there are with DIVI, but other than that I really truly love EXTRA for blogging and news sites.

  4. I am a Divi user. But I recently started a project in Extra Theme and loving it so far. I would though recommend 2 plugins: SJ James extra module mate avail from Aspen Grove market place (gives you all the divi modules not in extra) and the blank page template plugin by ayanize so u can create landing pages etc.

  5. I think we can achieve all things, that Extra provides, in Divi using shortcodes and some plugins. Divi is flagship, so they will keep down the line if they plan to merge both. Also Divi will have a lot of community support with numerous third party plugins. Migrating to Extra just for a few additional modules is not worth. Also they will try to optimise Divi more an more instead of Extra. Divi anytime.
